Video Goals Hilights : Real Madrid 5-0 Athletic Bilbao - La Liga

Cristiano Ronaldo's record-equalling 22nd La Liga hat-trick helped Real Madrid crush Athletic Bilbao and close to within four points of Barcelona.

Ronaldo's third treble in four league games drew him level with the tallies of Real legend Alfredo Di Stefano and ex-Athletic striker Telmo Zarra.
Headers from Ronaldo and Karim Benzema put Real 2-0 up at half-time.
Ronaldo tapped in his second and set up Benzema for Real's fourth before deflecting Pepe's shot into the corner.
The ball appeared to come off Ronaldo's arm but the referee awarded the goal to complete an emphatic win.
It was the World Player of the Year's 13th goal in six league games and his 17th of the season in all competitions.

Ronaldo's extraordinary goalscoring form has been central to Real Madrid's recovery from two defeats in their first three league games.

Since a 2-1 home reverse by city rivals Atletico Madrid on 13 September, Real have won six games in a row and scored 27 goals in the process.

They now sit fourth in the league table, one point above Atletico and four behind leaders Barca.

Their latest procession began as early as the second minute when Gareth Bale pinged a cross from the right to the far post and Ronaldo headed past Gorka Iraizoz from close range.

Athletic, who have now secured only one point in their last five league games and are 18th in the table, looked a shadow of the side that finished fourth last season as they wilted under relentless Real pressure.

With half-time approaching, Luka Modric floated a corner to the edge of the six-yard box where Benzema rose highest to double the home side's lead.

Slick interplay between Benzema and Bale teed up Ronaldo to slot in the third before the Portuguese raced on to Modric's incisive pass and squared for Benzema to tap in.

Ronaldo missed several chances to complete his hat-trick, only to get there in the 88th minute via a stroke of luck.

Pepe's scuffed effort struck Ronaldo's arm and flew past Iraizoz to round off another glorious night for the Real number seven, but a chastening one for the Basques.

Manchester United returned to the Premier League's top four for the first time in more than a year as Radamel Falcao's first United goal proved decisive against Everton. Angel Di Maria's calm finish gave the hosts a lead that survived to half-time as Leighton Baines saw a penalty saved. Baines picked out Steven Naismith to nod in an equaliser and Falcao cleared a Phil Jagielka header off the line. But Falcao stabbed in from Di Maria's shot to grab the winner. Everton, who have won only one of their first seven league games, could easily have taken something from the game but Bryan Oviedo, who scored the winner in the fixture last season, was denied by a tremendous stoppage-time save from David De Gea.
The Spaniard also had to be alert to keep out a late Leon Osman effort but, while United will be concerned by their vulnerability under late pressure, the result and the three points were paramount. Their first back-to-back league wins under Louis van Gaal carry the Dutchman's side into the Champions League qualification places for the first time since they drew with Chelsea in predecessor David Moyes' second league match in charge. With the international break, their next game is not until 20 October when they are away to West Brom and Van Gaal will hope his new-look side can consolidate their form to ensure more comfortable afternoons at Old Trafford.

West Ham climbed to seventh in the table as an own goal by Nedum Onuoha and Diafra Sakho's header left QPR two points from safety at the bottom.
The Hammers were ahead when Stewart Downing's corner struck the knee of Onuoha, standing on the edge of the six-yard area, and rolled in.
Charlie Austin fired wide from QPR substitute Bobby Zamora's cross before Sakho headed the second from a mis-hit cross by James Tomkins.
QPR have now won once in seven games.

Video Goals Hilights : Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Southampton - Premier League

Tottenham beat Southampton to end a run of four league games without a victory and give manager Mauricio Pochettino a win against his former club.

The home side went in front when Christian Eriksen latched on to a Nacer Chadli lay-off and arrowed in a shot.

Chadli almost added to the lead only for his shot to come back off the post.

Southampton increased the urgency in search of an equaliser but saw Sadio Mane fail to convert a Ryan Bertrand cross when he shot wide from six yards.
The visitors had also gone close when midfielder Victor Wanyama had a shot excellently saved by Hugo Lloris.
The defeat ended Southampton's run of six straight wins in all competitions at the hands of the man who led them to an impressive eighth last season, although they remain in the Premier League's top four.

For Pochettino, the win not only eased the strain on him as Spurs moved up to sixth in the Premier League, but provided evidence his players are coming to terms with his coaching methods.
He had instilled a high-energy and high-pressing style of play as he impressed during his tenure at Southampton, although the Argentine had struggled to implement a similar style at White Hart Lane.
However, against Southampton there was a desire and application from the home side with signs of progress.
Tottenham went close early on when a Jan Vertonghen header was cleared off the line by Bertrand, and Erik Lamela and Eriksen had long-range efforts saved before the Spurs pressure told.

Emmanuel Adebayor cut in from the right and passed to Chadli, who laid the ball off to Eriksen to drill in a low shot from the edge of the area.
It was only the fifth goal Southampton had conceded so far this season and they would have gone 2-0 down but for the woodwork. Chadli raced clear at the end of a Spurs counter-attack but his angled shot came back off the post.
The visitors may have started the season strongly but struggled to create chances. They did go close when a low Graziano Pelle cross found Mane at the far post but his shot was deflected wide by Kyle Naughton.
The full-back was forced off later after he was caught just above the ankle by a reckless Bertrand boot as the two challenged for a tackle.
Tottenham had kept the visitors at arm's length for most of the game and, after Wanyama's shot was saved and Mane's late effort, they secured their third league win of the campaign.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino:

"It was an important win. It was a very tough game. Southampton have unbelievable players.
"We are still improving. I arrived three months ago. It is always difficult to put together a different philosophy in such a short time. It is important to build something for the long term.
"All the players did a great job and did their best. We deserved the three points."

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman:

"It was difficult. We knew before the game that they are a strong team. The game was in the balance.
"They had good moments but in the second half little-by-little we had some dominance in the game. It is all about scoring goals and they did that better than us.
"Maybe that [Sadio Mane's miss] was the biggest chance of the game. It was great cross from Ryan Bertrand and he had to score but was unlucky. I am happy with performance today."

Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal - Premier League Hilights

Chelsea cemented their position at the top of the Premier League with victory over Arsenal as Arsene Wenger's winless streak against Jose Mourinho was extended to 12 games.

The old adversaries squared up in an ugly first-half moment when Wenger shoved Mourinho in the chest in Chelsea's technical area after Gary Cahill's challenge on Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez.

A semblance of order was restored although the tension still resurfaced - but as so often, it was Mourinho who had the last word with a win that puts the Blues five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.

Eden Hazard's first-half penalty put them on their way after he was fouled by Laurent Koscielny, while Diego Costa's ninth goal in seven games since his £32m summer move from Atletico Madrid wrapped up the win.

This never threatened to be a repeat of Chelsea's 6-0 thrashing of Arsenal in March that marred Wenger's 1,000th match in charge of the Gunners, but there was rarely a moment when his side threatened to end his dismal sequence against Mourinho as they suffered their first league loss of the season.

The home side may not have produced the flamboyant football that has featured in some of their play this season, but the old steel at the back is still in evidence and, in Costa and former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, they have acquired a potent partnership.

Costa's goalscoring has caught the eye but the wonderful raking pass from Fabregas that set up the second goal silenced the taunts aimed from the visiting fans and was his seventh Premier League assist of the season.
It was the crowning moment of a Chelsea performance that was ruthlessly efficient and sounded an ominous note to those hoping to stop Mourinho reclaiming the Premier League title this season.

Chelsea even survived the early loss of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was taken off before half-time and replaced by Petr Cech after taking a bang on the head in a collision with Sanchez, with the Belgian taken to hospital as a precaution.

Courtois's problems started when he raced out to beat Sanchez to a through ball and there was an accidental clash between the pair - the young goalkeeper recovered after being flat out but was unable to complete the half, the Chelsea medical team eventually signalling to Mourinho that he need to be replaced.
If the action on the pitch took time to get going, there was no time-wasting between Mourinho and Wenger as their obvious personal animosity quickly boiled over.
Wenger took exception to Mourinho giving his view on Cahill's tackle on Sanchez, marching menacingly into the Chelsea technical area before giving his counterpart a very clear two-handed shove in the chest.
Mourinho, not surprisingly, was unimpressed and it took the intervention of fourth official Jon Moss to at least restore a small measure of calm between the pair.

Arsenal had acquitted themselves well without putting Chelsea under serious pressure, but were unlocked by the pace and trickery of Hazard to go behind after 27 minutes. Koscielny had no other answer to the Belgian's run into the area than to stick his leg out and bring him down, with Hazard recovering his poise to score from the spot.

Chelsea, while not being at their best, had restricted Arsenal to the extent that the visiting attacking threat was non-existent, but the Gunners had a genuine grievance when Fabregas stopped Jack Wilshere's shot from the edge of the area with raised arms just after the hour, only for referee Martin Atkinson to remain unmoved.

And while Chelsea were resolute in defence, there remained the ever-present threat of Costa. He had barely been in the game but pounced to put the match out of Arsenal's reach with 12 minutes left.

Fabregas, as he has been so often this season since joining Chelsea from Barcelona in the summer, was the creator, as a long pass sent Costa beyond Arsenal's defence to lift a finish over Wojciech Szczesny.

  • Video Goals Bayern Munich 4-0 Hannover 96 - Bundesliga

Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben both scored twice to help Bayern Munich thrash Hannover and go four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

Lewandowski controlled a Rafinha pass to fire the first before Robben pounced on a mistake to double Bayern's lead.

Juan Bernat set up Lewandowski's second and Robben completed the rout with a trademark solo goal.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund's poor start to the league season continued as they lost 1-0 at home to Hamburg.

Lewandowski joined Bayern from Dortmund in pre-season but had only netted twice in his first six league games.

Two crisp finishes will boost the Polish striker's confidence, while at the other end Pep Guardiola's team have now gone seven games without conceding a goal.

It is a different story for Dortmund, as last season's runners-up slumped to their fourth defeat in seven games just three days after their 3-0 victory over Anderlecht in the Champions League.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored the winning goal in the 35th minute after an Adrian Ramos mistake as Dortmund dropped to 13th on seven points, 10 behind Bayern after only seven games.

Elsewhere, Hoffenheim went second in the table with a 2-1 victory over Schalke, Bayer Leverkusen salvaged a 2-2 draw against 10-man Paderborn with a 90th-minute Karim Bellarabi equaliser and Werder Bremen drew 1-1 with fellow strugglers Freiburg.

Good afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of the La Liga clash between Rayo Vallecano and Barcelona.

The hosts endured a tough start to the season, failing to win any of their first four outings, but they come into this match on the back of two consecutives victories.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are the early pacesetters in the division having dropped just two points so far, but they were beaten 3-2 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Danny Welbeck scored his first ever senior hat-trick to help fire Arsenal to an emphatic 4-1 victory over Galatasaray and get their Champions League campaign up and running. Criticized for his scoring rate by his former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal and having missed notable chances in the early days of his Arsenal career, Welbeck provided a powerful retort to crudely expose a shambolic Galatasaray backline. The England international struck twice in eight minutes midway through the opening period and added a sumptuous third after the break, by which time Alexis Sanchez had capped his own fine performance with a goal. The only disappointment for Arsene Wenger on an occasion that marked the 18th anniversary of his taking charge was a red card for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and concession of a penalty converted by Burak Yilmaz.
Szczesny will now have to sit out the trip to Anderlecht in three weeks’ time, but, regardless, it will be a match that Arsenal should now go into with confidence of making it out of the opening group stage for a 15th successive season. Had the result gone another way on Wednesday that may well not have been the case, after a defeat to Borussia Dortmund two weeks ago meant that a win against the visitors from Istanbul was, if not required, then certainly keenly desired.

Yet, in truth, despite injuries requiring a whole new midfield to the one that drew the north London derby on Saturday, a victory never looked in doubt after Welbeck poked the ball into the net in the 22nd minute. New Galatasaray coach Cesare Prandelli’s decision to go with a back three backfired horrendously, with Felipe Melo particularly exposed out of position at the heart of the defense. The pace and movement of Welbeck, supported by the ingenuity and speed of thought of Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, tormented the Brazilian midfielder and his defensive teammates throughout to give Arsenal a perfect confidence boost ahead of their duel with Chelsea on Sunday.

Still, it is doubtful how much of a guide this display, impressive though it was, is to Arsenal’s ability to reverse their recent series of results when going away to high-quality opposition. Certainly there is surely no prospect of Chelsea affording Arsenal with the same time and space both in front and behind their defense. Arsenal have always thrived against such kind opposition and with their new offensive weapons they have even more ammunition with which to take advantage.

The first goal was the perfect example. Sanchez, back in the side after having surprisingly started on the bench against Tottenham, continued to make an impressive start to his Arsenal career, cutting in from the left flank with ease and slipping a pass in behind Melo. The Galatasaray defender was left incredibly flat-footed to allow Welbeck to easily run beyond him and, while he almost lost control of the situation, stretch and stick out a boot to send a shot through the legs of Fernando Muslera. The finish for the second was more assured and the Galatasaray defending even less so. Aurelien Chedjou flicked a header errantly back toward his own goal from just inside his half and Welbeck easily out-paced Melo once more before taking a touch to settle himself and then placing the ball into the corner.

Welbeck had a chance to make it a quick-fire hat-trick but failed to make clean contact after Ozil’s layoff. At the other end Goran Pandev was similarly lacking with his finish to squander Galatasaray’s best opening of the period. Before halftime the visitors found themselves three goals behind. Arsenal’s world-class operators signed in the last two summers had all the time in the world to combine, with former Real Madrid man Ozil feeding a ball through to ex-Barcelona forward Sanchez, who picked out the same corner of the net  and from a similar position as Welbeck just over 10 minutes earlier.

The half may have been made even worse for Galatasaray and Melo, but the former Juventus man could count himself fortunate to have escaped with just a yellow card for a two-footed lunge on Sanchez. He may have wished he was off the pitch when Arsenal extended their advantage just seven minutes into the second half. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had no pressure applied to him before sliding yet another pass down the side of Galatasaray’s hapless defense and Welbeck produced a clever dink that, unlike in Dortmund two weeks ago, found the net and sealed his hat-trick.

Given Arsenal’s dominance, it was even more difficult to fathom why Szczesny continued his propensity for questionable decision making by rushing from his goal to take down Yilmaz after the striker ran in behind the hosts’ backline. Substitute goalkeeper David Ospina’s first job was to pick the ball out of the net as Yilmaz confidently converted from the spot. But the Colombian showed that he is more than capable of adequately filling Szczesny’s gloves in Belgium by saving impressively form a Yilmaz header and then a shot from the angle by substitute Hamit Altintop as Arsenal avoided any unnecessary late drama.
