Partizan v Tottenham: Racist banner in Belgrade mars Europa clash

MAURICIO POCHETTINO last night branded Partizan fans “disrespectful” and “unacceptable” after they displayed an anti-Semitic banner during Tottenham's 0-0 draw in Belgrade

The club were made aware of a banner based on English sitcom “Only Fools and Horses” which had been changed to “Only Jews and Pussies” and had been hung over one of the vast exit ramps in the packed Partizan end of the stadium.

However, the banner remained until after the game, with UEFA delegates able to gather photographic evidence after it was pointed out to them by officials from Tottenham.

That will be examined by UEFA today, together with the report from Israeli referee Alon Yefet, although last night news of the banner had already reached executives in Nyon.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino said after the game: “I didn’t see but the club is aware. And if it is true, that it is very disrespectful.

“It is a shame as it was a great atmosphere. It is very disrespectful, unacceptable and a massive problem for us.”

As recently as the beginning of September, UEFA chief executive Michel Platini used the platform at a conference on diversity to reiterate the zero-tolerance stance over racism.

In the summer, four clubs were punished for racist offences - each of them having the relevant area of the ground shut for their next European game.

That is the most likely punishment for a club that was kicked out of the UEFA Cup completely in 2007 at the culmination of an ongoing hooliganism problem.

They had been cited in 25 of their 36 previous European home games for crowd violence, culminating in a riot against Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

Partizan have worked hard in the interim to repair their tarnished image and last night their manager Marko Nikolic, seemingly unaware of the banner, praised the behaviour of his club's fans.

The players took a bow in front of them after the final whistle with the goalless draw seeming to suit both teams after Harry Kane’s shot which hit the crossbar after just 65 seconds the closest either team came to breaking the deadlock.

“We had a lot of positive things,” Pochettino said. “It is true before the game we wanted three points, but when you analyse the game the result is fair. We need to take a lot of positive things and move forward.

“The Partizan performance did not surprise me. We analysed their last five or six games and we knew they had skills.

“It was difficult on the pitch and we needed to move the ball quicker. We needed to adapt our style. But that is not an excuse  - Besiktas will find it hard here too.”

The main negative from the evening, however, was a late injury to Andros Townsend which makes him a doubt for Sunday’s visit of West Brom.

“Andros has a dead leg injury and tomorrow we will know if available,” Pochettino said.
